NGRAIN® Software Brings Advanced 3D Capabilities to Product Knowledge Management

Enhancements to NGRAIN Knowledge Module and Mobilizer deliver revolutionary improvements in the way companies capture, manage and communicate complex product knowledge for training, maintenance and service applications

New York, NY — October 22, 2003 — NGRAIN Corporation (www.ngrain.com), a leading developer of interactive 3D visualization and simulation software tools, has extended the capabilities of it's award-winning product Mobilizer to integrate interactive 3D into Microsoft Office Word 2003 documents and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 presentations. Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates showcased this new capability yesterday during his keynote address at the launch of the Microsoft Office System.

A fully interactive 3D model of a Cobra GT-inspired Roadster created by NGRAIN and partner Alion Science and Technology for custom auto builder Factory Five Racing was demonstrated during Mr. Gates' keynote. The model was integrated directly into a Microsoft Office Word 2003 document meant to represent a Factory Five product brochure. During the keynote, Mr. Gates was able to:

  • Open and interact with the 3D model while in Reading Layout
  • Rotate, assemble and disassemble the car part by part
  • Run various animations on the roadster to highlight key parts
  • Use the Microsoft Office System's new Research Task Pane feature to use web services like MSN Search to find additional key information about the vehicle.

“Microsoft's smart client technology makes it easier for users to locate, access and interact with information directly from their desktop, providing a quicker, more dynamic model for business decision making,” said Mark Young, general manager of the Platform Strategy and Partner Group at Microsoft. “NGRAIN's use of Microsoft smart client technology for the Microsoft Office System is a vivid example of how partners can develop solutions that address a variety of traditional and non-traditional usage scenarios.”

By including highly interactive 3D content in Microsoft Office System applications, NGRAIN Mobilizer allows users to create virtual ‘hands-on' experiences in their documents and presentations. Users can interact with models to rotate, move, zoom, and draw; cross-section to experience true depth and internal elements; disassemble and reassemble part-by-part; trigger parts explosions for a quick view of all components in the model; step-through procedural animations; and hyperlink to external reference materials.

“Interactive 3D communicates complex information in a far more compelling and effective way than simple text and pictures,” said Anil Sabharwal, managing director of the NGRAIN Technology Group at NGRAIN. "By using Mobilizer to integrate 3D into everyday business applications like Word 2003 and PowerPoint 2003, NGRAIN is taking the first step in making interactive 3D as accessible and ubiquitous as the Microsoft Office System.”

NGRAIN is applicable in a host of industries and applications. Sample applications could include:

  • Aiding medical professionals in the step-by-step communication of complex procedures and diagnoses
  • Training manufacturing employees on assembly and maintenance procedures
  • Helping scientists simulate a particular phenomenon, such as weather patterns
  • Briefing government or military personnel on terrain impact or home land defense scenarios
  • Allowing GIS professionals to collaborate on mapping geographical areas
  • Enabling video game designers to share 3D content for mark-up and review
