VARDEC_logoVancouver, British Columbia, August 8, 2014VARDEC is an industry-led research consortium initiated by The Boeing Company to continue its multi-year, active involvement in visual analytics research at Canadian universities and with Canadian industry. VARDEC industry members work with Canadian researchers to create visual analytics projects that will benefit VARDEC members, and thus accelerate the use of advanced analytics to benefit the Canadian economy.

Visual analytics (VA) is the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces. VA tools and techniques enable analysts to explore and synthesize information and derive insight from massive, dynamic and possibly conflicting data collections.

Two VARDEC members, NGRAIN and Convergent Manufacturing Technologies, are collaborating on an applied research project to improve awareness of real-time sensor data using 3D virtual and augmented techniques in composite manufacturing environments.

This project will explore and evaluate various methods that can be used to display real-time and historical sensor data on a 3D view of a large-scale composite part being manufactured. The resulting visualizations will be usable by all employees involved in the manufacturing process.

“This project offers a great opportunity to deploy NGRAIN 3D virtual and augmented technologies towards solving hard problems related to complex equipment and processes in a manufacturing environment,” said Barry Po, Director Product Management for NGRAIN. “We’re confident that the experience gained will be beneficial to all partners and the industry at large.”

“This project is the beginning of a significant collaboration among Canadian VA researchers and the aerospace industry to make use of the power of visual analytics for exploring and utilizing the increasingly vast amounts of data that are available for analysis and decision making,” said Ken Goosen, Chair of the VARDEC Steering Committee.

VARDEC was formed in 2013 as a collaboration among The Boeing Company, Mitacs Inc., a Canadian non-profit research organization, and the Canadian Network for Visual Analytics researchers (CANVAC). VARDEC is headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia. Founding Canadian member companies include NGRAIN and Convergent Manufacturing Technologies. VARDEC is aligned with the Government of Canada’s Industrial & Technological Benefits (ITB) agreements with international partners that help to create key, strategic technology investments in the Canadian economy.

NGRAIN is creating a world transformed with interactive 3D and augmented reality technologies. With NGRAIN products, companies enhance the performance of people, machines, and the interactions between them. NGRAIN’s integrated, versatile platform combines enterprise 3D assets and data to provide operational intelligence for mission critical equipment and accelerate decision-making across the organization; from the factory floor to the field.

Convergent Manufacturing Technologies Inc. is the world-leader in providing software, hardware, and analysis services to the aerospace industry to reduce manufacturing risk, shorten development times, and lower manufacturing cost in producing complex composite structures. Convergent focuses on developing innovative solutions for difficult composites manufacturing problems, and has the unique ability to quickly and effectively transition academic research to industrial applications.
